We have a wavelet based compression package that runs in a DOS window on your PC or in an X window on your Unix workstation (Sun Solaris 2.8). This software package is available for a free trial. It is able to compress industry standard SEG "Y" IBM floating point format datasets by a factor of 10 without visible loss of signal definition. Ideal for remote location stack and limited prestack data transfers. The input data should be reasonably well modulated. We have updated the routines to automatically detect and compress all *.sgy files found in the current directory. The program will skip *.sgy files that have already been compressed to *.cgs file types. Intermediate compressed formats have been made UNIX and DOS compatible. The example below used a factor of 0.25 to achieve a 10.92 reduction in the original SEG "Y" file size. Easy to use DOS application :- >s_com Input directory : . (. for current directory) Winzip or PKZIP *.cgs files (PKZIP compress *.cgs) ftp or email zip file from the field to head office Winzip or PKUNZIP to recover *.cgs files (PKUNZIP -o compress.zip *.cgs) >s_dec Input directory: . (. for current) outputs standard SEG "Y" IBM 32 bit Floating Point format
or use following commands for Unix: %s_com Input directory : . (. for current directory) compress *.cgs (generates *.cgs.Z) ftp or email *.cgs.Z files from the field to head office uncompress *.cgs.Z %s_dec Input directory : . (. for current directory ) outputs standard SEG "Y" IBM 32 bit Floating Point format
6 minutes spent sending a data email is a lot less stressful than 60 minutes of the same, especially on an intermittent low baud rate link. Save yourself some frustration and email mrh@choicegeophysical.com for a free one month demo license. Full DOS license is only £60.00 per month and Full Solaris 2.7 UNIX license is only £80.00 per month. Recently updated to handle 16 bit integer input. IEEE version available on request.
